Due to recent outbreaks of Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV) in Colorado, the Humane Society of Boulder Valley must quarantine domestic rabbits with outdoor exposure for two weeks. If you are considering re-homing a rabbit to HSBV, please keep and confine rabbits in your home, or an indoor space, for a two-week period before bringing them to HSBV. If you have questions, please call us at (303) 442-4030.
Before you relinquish
Learn about our Safety Net Services.
At the Humane Society of Boulder Valley, we understand that at times people are no longer able to care for their pets due to living situations, allergies or other reasons. HSBV offers Safety Net services to prevent relinquishment when possible. If you are experiencing a housing crisis, displacement or hospitalization, or other situation that temporarily impacts your ability to care for your pet, our team may be able to help!
About relinquishing…
There are times when the human-animal bond breaks or circumstances change and a guardian must relinquish a pet. Please carefully consider the following if you are thinking about relinquishing an animal:
A health examination, behavior assessment and/or history review will determine if your pet is suited for our adoption program. To offset the cost of this evaluation and the pet care we provide each animal, a fee is requested when you relinquish your pet.
You will be offered the option of being notified by a member of our team if your rehomed animal is determined not to be an adoption candidate at our facility. If you choose this option, you will be able to reclaim the animal within 24 hours of notification by us. Please carefully review the release statement if you are considering this option.
Animals can be relinquished during normal business hours; please use the Client Service Entrance.
At this time, HSBV does not accept farm and livestock birds, including chickens, ducks, geese, pigeons and peafowl.
RelinquishmentĀ fee:
- $75 per dog or cat living in Boulder and Broomfield Counties
- $150 per dog or cat living in any area outside of Boulder or Broomfield Counties within Colorado
- $75 per ferret or rabbit living in any area within Colorado
- $40 per small animal (rats, mice, gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters or parakeets) living in any area within Colorado
- $200 per animal outside of the state of Colorado
Please schedule an appointment, or call (303) 442-4030 with questions.
If your pet has bitten and broken skin in the last 10 days and you are seeking relinquishment services at HSBV, you must reside in Boulder or Broomfield County. Additional relinquishment fees apply for bite quarantine boarding. View a list of local animal agencies in and around Colorado.
What if I need to return a pet I adopted from HSBV’s Adoption Center?
While there is a person for every animal, we know not every animal is for every person. If you adopt an animal from HSBV and discover you are not compatible due to behavior concerns or medical issues, you may return your pet at any time. Refunds will be provided for pets returned to HSBV within 30 days of adoption.

Relinquishment Forms
HSBV provides forms for your use as you organize your petās relinquishment. We encourage you to be as detailed and clear as possible as all information will be used during assessment and then passed along to your petās adoptive family.
Copies of pet medical records, including vaccination history, are critical in providing care for your pet. We encourage you to contact your veterinarian before you bring your pet in to us to request a medical history report that you can share with us at the time of relinquishment.
You will be required to sign a document that releases guardianship of the animal from you to the Humane Society of Boulder Valley.
While all forms are available at time of surrender, we encourage you to fill out the surrender form before coming to HSBV so you can be as detailed as possible about your pet’s history.
