Attention Peanut butter-loving friends! Our Chief Clinic Veterinarian, Jennifer Bolser, DVM, cVMA has tips on how you can help protect your pets given the voluntary recall of Jif® Peanut Butter products due to the potential salmonella contamination:

“Salmonella can infect all animal species including us and our pets. Fortunately, many animals exposed to Salmonella never develop signs of illness. But, for those that do get sick, typical signs include diarrhea (often with blood or mucus), lethargy, anorexia or/and vomiting. Symptoms usually develop within 1-4 days of exposure to Salmonella. If your pet is showing signs of illness, please contact your veterinarian.

Please also see the list of recalled products from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, these products should be disposed into the trash. Always remember to practice regular and thorough handwashing routines, especially after handling contaminated food and all waste materials – (i.e. poop) – human or animal.” – Dr. Bolser
