Perhaps the kindest thing you can do for an animal that is terminally ill, aged or so severely injured that they will never lead a normal life is to induce his or her death quietly and humanely through euthanasia.
Euthanasia is accomplished by injection of a death-inducing drug. Our staff may first administer a tranquilizer to relax your pet. Following the injection, your pet will immediately go into a quiet and irreversible deep unconsciousness. Death will come quickly and painlessly.
Guardians releasing an animal for euthanasia service should be prepared to provide proof of ownership, supporting information on medical or behavioral condition, and personal identification.
We are unable to have guardians present with their pet during the euthanasia procedure. If you want to be with your pet during euthanasia, please contact your pet’s primary veterinarian to ask about this service. If you are an existing client of our Veterinary Hospital, please call (303) 442-4030 ext. 680. to schedule an appointment. You can also view our list of partners for at-home euthanasia services.

Pet Illness and Loss Support
We know losing a pet can be a devastating experience. The Humane Society of Boulder Valley offers a free Pet Illness and Loss Support Group for those who have experienced or anticipate the loss of their companion animal.
Pet Illness and Loss Support is now available for both in-person and virtual participation. The group meets on the first Saturday of each month from 1 – 2:30 p.m. In-person participation is hosted in the HSBV Library. To attend virtually, please call 707-790-7554, or email [email protected] to request a virtual meeting link.
Although euthanasia will be the most likely cause of loss experienced by those who visit HSBV, some may also struggle to decide when or how to make a euthanasia decision for their ill or aging pet. Others might still be looking for a pet that has gone missing or need help in coming to terms with pet relinquishment.
Richard Mercer, Group Facilitator, was previously a grief counselor for TRU Community Care. In addition to giving talks and providing grief workshops for various community groups, university classes, and a federal prison, he has facilitated grief groups for TRU since 2014. He recognizes that grief for most people, although painful, is a natural healing process. As part of this healing process, most grieving people can use supportive companionship and sometimes a little guidance.
